“When math makes sense, kids leap way ahead–whether they started out far behind or are already ahead in math,” explains owner Renji Kurup. “The Mathnasium program makes sure that kids get a good understanding of math concepts. The program meets children where they are and then brings them along. Mathnasium is the leader in math education and the Mathnasium Method™ isn’t just about doing math, it’s about a total transformation in competence and confidence in children.”
Renji, who is the Mom of a six-year-old son, comes from a family of teachers; her mother was a chemistry professor and her grandfather was an educator. “I know the important role good education plays in shaping kids for life. I don’t believe that children are hardwired to be good or bad at math. With the right materials and instruction, I know that any child can learn, enjoy and thrive in math,” she states.
Comprehensive Assessment
“The Mathnasium program pinpoint’s each child’s learning needs through a unique and comprehensive assessment process, then meets them where they are, and takes them where they need to go through a customized learning plan that meets the child’s math goals,” says Renji. “The program’s specially trained math instructors, who both excel in understanding math and teaching techniques, provide face-to-face instruction and continually check for the child’s understanding, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Transformative Results
“The results are transformative,” Renji says. “Students and parents will see measurable changes not only in math, but in attitude, confidence and general school progress. Our program strengthens the natural love of learning.”
No Homework
There is no homework with the program. The instructors also set aside time to help children with their homework, tests or quizzes from school. This takes the burden off parents and helps keep the child on track in school.
“We understand the stress that today’s on-line learning is causing students and parents,” says Renji. “Let us take over the math instruction for your children. We offer math lessons, math tutoring and after-school homework help to students in elementary, middle and high school, as well as math help for all the major standardized tests.”
Commitment and Cost
Enrollment in the program requires a minimum six-month commitment, because building mastery layer-by-layer and math learning is truly a long-term process. It is imperative that children understand, master the concepts and retain their knowledge, and this requires children to put in the time and practice. Building a child’s foundational understanding supports progressive learning, higher performance and long-term retention.
Children attend Mathnasium’s one-hour sessions (online or in-person) at least two times a week. Improvement is solid and progressive; within three months, children’s attitudes change. They build confidence in their skills and enjoy learning new concepts. Cost is $250 to $350 a month, which is an average of only $30 – $40 for each private lesson. About 60 percent of Mathnasium students are enrolled in the program because they are having problems with math at school. About 40 percent of the students are building on their math skills so that they can get ahead.
“Children don’t hate math. They do hate being confused and intimidated by math. With understanding comes passion, and with passion comes growth – a treasure is unlocked.”
Larry Martinek, Career Math Teacher who developed the Mathnasium Method.
