Dinner & a Show

February 1, 2016

Collegeville’s 2016 “Dinner & a Show” to Debut the Hilarious “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” Feb. 25 – 28

Before the show, area residents can enjoy pre-theatre dinner specials at local independent restaurants

Ursinus College has again teamed up with The Collegeville Economic Development Corp. (CEDC) to offer a “Dinner & a Show” promotion featuring the Tony award-winning musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”  This hilarious and endearing show details the cutthroat competition of a school sixth-grade spelling bee while the participants are battling puberty, helicopter parenting, allergies, and the pressure to become the best speller in Putnam County.  As an added bonus, fifteen local restaurants will be offering dinner specials to individuals who attend the show.

Performances for this wacky comedy are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25; Friday, Feb. 26; and Saturday, Feb. 27 at Ursinus’ Lenfest Theater.  A 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28.  Tickets are only $5 general admission and $2 for students and senior citizens. The tickets can be purchased at www.ursinus.edu/tickets. (610-409-3030).

Individuals will be issued a receipt which they should show at the restaurant on the day of the performance to get the dinner special.  They will also need the receipt to give to the Ursinus Box Office in order to pay for and pick up their tickets.  Theatergoers should arrive at the box office at least 15 minutes before the show begins.

Directed by Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater Meghan Brodie, the show features an eclectic group of sixth graders who arrive at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyper-allergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that she’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads.

In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, the spellers reveals their hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious,” “jocular,” and “effervescent” spellers.

The following restaurants are offering dinner specials to customers attending “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”  It is highly recommended that theatergoers make reservations with them and arrive at the restaurant by 5:30 p.m. to enjoy a leisurely dinner and to allow enough time to get to the Ursinus campus.
