Dinner & a Show

Ursinus College, Collegeville Economic Development Corp. Present “Dinner and a Show”

“By The Way, Meet Vera Stark” runs Feb. 23-26 on the Ursinus College campus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2017) — The acclaimed comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark is coming to the stage at Ursinus College and theatergoers can enjoy pre-show dinner specials at local restaurants for a memorable evening out.  For the Sunday afternoon matinee, the specials are available for either lunch or dinner.

Ursinus College and the Collegeville Economic Development Corporation (CEDC) are again teaming up for “Dinner and a Show.” Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, Friday, Feb. 24, Saturday, Feb. 25 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 in the Lenfest Theater in the Kaleidoscope Performing Arts Center on the Ursinus College campus.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, is a comic look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood. The play tells the story of Vera Stark, an African-American maid and budding actress whose boss, Gloria Mitchell, is a white Hollywood star desperately trying to hold onto her career.

“The play is hilarious and smart,” says Domenick Scudera, a professor of theater at Ursinus who is directing the play. “Act 1 is a screwball comedy played as a screwball comedy in Hollywood of 1933. Act 2 transports us to the present day, where a panel of scholars are hotly (and hysterically) debating the career of Vera Stark by analyzing her films and her appearance on a 1970s TV show.”

The Ursinus production stars junior theater majors Mya Flood as Vera Stark and Charlotte Torres as Gloria Mitchell. Nottage, the playwright, won the Pulitzer Prize for her play Ruined in 2009. Her latest play, Sweat, grew out of Nottage’s Reading Project, a multi-year and multi-platform work that focused on Reading, Pa.

Tickets for By the Way, Meet Vera Stark are $8 general admission and $5 for seniors, students and Ursinus faculty and staff. They can be purchased at www.ursinus.edu/tickets, on the CEDC website, www.collegevilledevelopment.org, or by calling the Ursinus box office at (610) 409-3030. The CEDC website includes information about Dinner and a Show and participating restaurants.

At both websites, individuals will be issued a receipt to show at the participating restaurant on the day of the performance to get the dinner special.
