Owner Erica Griffin opened Collegeville’s newest Main Street salon and beauty supply store on May 6th. She named her business “Ryan Skye” after the middle names of her older and younger daughters.

In High School, Erica took classes in cosmetology and secured her license when she graduated. After school, she first worked a “normal” job, but quickly realized that her passion was hair care. She worked for a year in her older sister’s salon, then opened and operated her own salon for four years behind a barber shop. For the next 10 years, she owned and operated another salon in Norristown. But at one point she realized that her growth there was limited, and decided to relocate her business to a more suburban area.

Erica and her family live in Royersford, and she had experienced herself how hard it was to get minority hair supplies outside of urban areas. So four years ago when she opened a salon in Phoenixville, she added retail hair products to her business. But not just any products.

Erica’s motto is “shop your hair care with a licensed pro.” “We first try all our products ourselves, and our store carries the ones that we find are the best and that we use ourselves. We also carry popular items that are rated four stars or higher in customer reviews. Some of our hair products are organic and clean; some are not, but all are highly rated by consumers and by us,” Erica explains. The majority of minority beauty products are sold by corporations; Erica operates one of the few minority women-owned companies: I call it my indie “Ulta,” says Erica.

Ryan Skye did well in Phoenixville, but their customers had to constantly hunt for parking, and Erica quickly outgrew their space.

“We moved to Collegeville to be part of a growing, diverse community. We are working to target our business to everyone of all races. We want to plant our roots and grow here. Our hope and goal is to be an integral part of the Collegeville community for the long haul,” says Erica.

In addition to their curated hair products, Ryan Skye specializes in all types of wigs and hair extensions. They are currently diversifying their product line to include these products for all skin tones.

With 20 years of experience, Erica can help clients fit and select the best styles, cuts, and colors. And for customers with balding and thinning hair, the store carries toppers and extensions. “Wigs provide natural hair protection for thinning hair, endless styles for different looks, and increase individuals’ self-esteem. And sometimes, changing a look can be just plain fun!,” Erica says.

The store also specializes in braiding all hair types. Braiding hair locks in moisture and protects both the scalp and hair ends. Braiding by a professional also requires minimal maintenance and can also look good for weeks. Jayda Baker, Erica’s 20-year-old daughter specializes in hair braiding at the salon.

Erica started an on-line order business with curbside pick-up during the pandemic, and it did well. “About 30 percent of our shoppers now shop on-line,” she says. “We are working on growing our on-line presence.” The store also has a loyalty program with over 1,000 members.

Many of Ryan Skye’s customers are located in Collegeville, but the store also acts as a unique destination, attracting shoppers from all over the greater Philadelphia area, including Lansdale, King of Prussia and the Main line.
We wish Ryan Skye much success in Collegeville and hope you will stop by!  They are open six days a week. Check their website for the many products that they carry, their services, and their opening hours.
