Bonjung Japanese Restaurant, a BYOB located in Collegeville Station, has been serving authentic Japanese and Korean cuisine since it’s opening in March, 2005. A highlight of the menu is its excellent sushi selection, and now Korean BBQ.

Bonjung is owned by Gregory Shin. Greg, who is of Korean descent, immigrated to the United States with his family in 1976. He graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in computer engineering and worked as an engineer for 15 years. However, Greg always had aspirations to open a restaurant, and the opportunity finally arrived after he moved to the Collegeville area in 2003.

In his research, Greg saw that there were no Japanese restaurants in the area, and decided to focus on Japanese cuisine in his restaurant. One of Greg’s goals was to become part of the community and to foster appreciation of Asian culture and food. In his own way, Greg was following in his father’s footsteps; his father had started the first Korean-American newspaper in the United States.

Chefs at Bonjung sushi, Japanese, Korean BBQ Restaurant at Collegeville StationWhen Greg decided to open his restaurant, he enlisted the help of his brother, Leo Shin and a close friend and sushi chef, Yonemoto. Both Leo and Yonemoto worked together at Fuji Mountain Japanese Restaurant in center city Philadelphia before joining Greg to chef at Bonjung.

Other Offerings at Bonjung

From the start, Bonjung offered authentic Japanese selections along with some popular Korean dishes, which has been proven to be consistent favorites, particularly the stone pot BiBimBop and Kalbi, among others. Recognizing the appetite for Korean flavors, Bonjung decided to expand its Korean menu in 2019 and added Korean BBQ to its business name: Bonjung Japanese & Korean BBQ Restaurant.

You’ll also find:

  • Semi-annual sushi making classes and tasting menus
  • Private sushi roll demonstrations upon request
  • Catering available upon request

Highly Rated

Bonjung was the first Zagat-rated restaurant in Collegeville. It was also listed several times as a “Best of Philly” sushi restaurant, and has been a winner of the Montco Happening list from 2014 to 2019.
