Main Street Program
Forming Farmers Market Planning Committee
The
Collegeville Main Street Program’s (CMSP) Economic Restructuring
(ER) Committee invites you to join the new Farmer’s Market
sub-committee now being formed to develop a Farmer’s Market
on Collegeville’s Main Street.
Communities all around Collegeville are rooted in growing and raising
foods, fruit, and vegetables. One of the efforts of the ER
committee is to promote the local economies in the Collegeville
area as well as draw people to Collegeville Main Street. The Farmer’s
Market sub-committee plans to conduct planning and vendor recruitment
throughout 2010 with the intention of launching the Farmer’s
Market in 2011.
If you are interested in helping out by becoming part of this sub-committee,
join us for our first meeting on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at
6:00 PM at the CMSP office located at 476 East Main Street, Collegeville
(near Schrader’s Auto). The committee will be focusing
its efforts on volunteer management, the recruitment of farmers
and craftsmen, marketing efforts, planning entertainment, and contributing
ideas and labor to make this initiative happen.
Cathy Kernen, ER committee member says, “There are other
important goals of a Farmer’s Market beyond just the economic
benefits. It brings people together to help build a strong
and vibrant community. And just as important, you will be
able to get fresh food and produce directly from the farmer and
take it immediately to your dinner table to promote the health
and wellness of your family.”
The Main Street Program urges you to come out and volunteer your
time by joining the ER Farmers Market sub-committee as we craft
our Farmer’s Market for Main Street, Collegeville. No
experience is needed. The ideal committee member will have
a passion for providing options for community members to support
local farmers and to obtain local produce and other food items.

the farmers market planning, contact Linda Flederbach at (610) 454-1050

Program Pedestrian Safety Committee…
Did
You Know:
- At intersections with
no signals (even a broken signal), pedestrians have the right-of-way
when crossing the road within a crosswalk (whether it’s
marked or not).
- Pedestrians
may not suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and
walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as
to constitute a hazard. Doing so could result
in fines and court costs in excess of $50. Think twice
before you step out into traffic!!
- In
2008, Pennsylvania drivers were involved in 174 fatal crashes
with pedestrians. And that doesn’t
include the non-fatal but serious accidents.
- It
takes the average person 1.5 seconds to perceive and then react
to an incident in the road ahead of them. During
those 1.5 seconds your car is STILL moving forward. This
is why we post speed limits – to give you time to react. Keep
our citizens safe! Drive at or below the speed limit – and
maintain a safe following distance.
- The
safe following distance is MUCH farther than you may think. Use
the 3-Second Rule: follow the car in front of you, and
stay THREE seconds behind it. At night or in hazardous
weather, double that to SIX seconds. Maintaining a safe
distance from cars ahead of you is critical to safety, especially
in an area where there are pedestrians. Stay safe – stay
alive.
PennDOT reminds motorists that the pedestrian crossing signs placed in the center
of the road at designated areas are designed to slow down traffic and alert motorists
to areas where they can expect pedestrians.
